Daily 5 - Our Literacy Program
In Second Grade students are growing each day in reading! They are working towards becoming independent, confident readers! At Durant we use a program called the Daily 5. The program includes 5 things that students should do daily to become better readers:
1. Read to Self - Students read independently for 20 minutes each day. As they learn how to pick good fit books students become more interested in reading for pleasure and for information.
2. Read to Someone - Students read books with a buddy helping improve fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Of course it's always fun to hang out with a friend and share a good book!
3. Listen to Reading - Research shows that listening to fluent (reading that is at an appropriate pace and uses expression) helps students become better readers themselves. We listen to reading at our listen center with books on CD and also on our classroom computers on many cool websites.
4. Word Work - Students use manipulatives such as magnetic letters, play-doh, and etch-a-sketches to practice spelling words and learning new phonics patterns.
5. Work on Writing - Students have many choices for Work on Writing - sticker story, picture prompt, writing a friendly letter or just free writing. The students are becoming authors each day as they work on their writing.

Mini Lessons
In between rotations of Daily 5 students participate in mini lessons. Mini lessons may be about reading skills/strategies, phonics, grammar, and writing. We read aloud many different books, interact/talk with carpet partners and participate in activities together.
Cafe Board
Our Cafe board is a display in our classroom were we display our reading strategies. It is a menu of strategies that readers can use. The letters in cafe stand for:
Comprehension - I understand what I read
Accuracy - I can read the words
Fluency - I can read at a good pace with expression
Expand Vocabulary - I know and use interesting words

Reading Groups
During Daily 5 rotations students meet with the teacher for reading groups. Reading groups may be based on reading level, strategy or interest. We spend time reading, discussing our reading, applying and practicing new reading skills and creating products based on our learning.

Good Fit Book Resources
Reading a good fit book is such an important part of becoming a good reader! Reading books that are too hard, too easy, or don't interest your child are surefire ways to disinterest your child in reading. Check out the following resources to help you and your child choose the right books.
